Manu Dibango: Soul Makosa

Posted in Culture, Music on January 16th, 2009 by Tony – Be the first to comment

The first real disco record was 1972’s “Soul Makossa” by the Cameroon-born sax player Manu Dibango. In the song, Dibango can be heard chanting Mama-se, mama-sa, mama-koo-sa.

Mama-se, mama-sa, mama-koo-sa.

Michael Jackson used it 10 years later in his song “Wanna be Startin’ Somethin’” (via Neatorama)

Stevie Wonder – Superstition live on Sesame Street

I LOVE the kid rocking out to Stevie. Why we don’t have music like this on kids shows today I just don’t know. But this is classic, great stuff.

Yet I can’t help thinking that this belongs on the Muppets more than Sesame Street. Maybe the Animal effect?

Top 50 Music Videos Of 2006

Posted in Movies, Music on December 8th, 2006 by Tony – Be the first to comment

DoCopenhagen has a great list of the top 50 music videos of 2006.

Some are obvious.  Some are not.  Lots of fun watching.

Some of my favorites so far:

  1. OK Go – Here it Goes Again.  Sure it’s getting close to overplaying, but the treadmills are just genius.  Always amusing.
  2. Gnarls Barkley – Crazy.  Just gorgeous to watch.  Mesmerizing.
  3. Malajube – Montreal -40°C.  A fun little pop song.  Sure it’s not in English, but it’s a great video.
  4. Field Music – in context. I LOVE this video.  It’s a good song, a great video.  I want this room.
  5. Gnarls Barkley – Gone Daddy Gone.  Another fun video.  Great cover.

There are more worth watching.  I’m not a big fan of the Teddybears video, but really like their song.  There are a ton others I’ve never heard of, and are still working through them.

Beck: Clap Hands on SNL

Posted in Movies, Music on November 6th, 2006 by Tony – 1 Comment

Maybe one of the better musical performances I’ve seen on SNL.  Beck performs ‘Clap Hands’ using a set table, forks, spoons, clapping and it looks like a dime-store guitar.

Stunningly good.  Beck never fails to amaze or please.

This is the news I’ve been waiting on.  2007 is when we can expect the Pixies to hit the recording studio.

Things I like.

Things I like in my music videos. An age check verification, a catchy dance tune, girls wearing very little, hips swaying, touching. Yeah, that’ll get me every time.

Hand Carved Guitars

I think I might have linked to this in the past, but it’s worth a re-visit. Carved Guitars are hand-carved pieces of art. Be sure to check out the Yellow Submarine, The Wangcaster (best.guitar.name.evar.) and The Steve Martin Banjo.
