I’m not to proud at the moment to be living in Fairfax, VA. I just read about what the Fairfax County Library is doing: removing classics off the shelves if they’re not checked out.
“Library officials explain, not unreasonably, that their shelf space is limited and that they want to satisfy the demands of the public. Every unpopular book that’s removed from circulation, after all, creates room for a new page-turner by John Grisham, David Baldacci, or James Patterson–the authors of the three most checked-out books in Fairfax County last month.”
Now the article brings up a great question, What is a Library for? Is it to cater to the masses fickle (and craptastic) reading needs? Or is it to be a cultural repository, aiding in the enlightenment and education of the people.
Keep in mind that Libraries are funded by the government. This official funding lends credence to the cultural repository I believe.
I find this whole new development disturbing.
“Books by Charlotte Brontë, William Faulkner, Thomas Hardy, Marcel Proust and Alexander Solzhenitsyn have recently been pulled.“
I’m so not proud of my local government, nor of where I live.
I think I might start making a list of books to go check out, just to keep these books on the shelves.
