Elsewhere for April 9th

These are my delicious links for April 9th:

  • Don't use @import. – Wow. I had no idea. Steve (who knows what he is talking about) talks about how using @import is actually slower and worse for the browsers than link elements.
  • Bob Ross, The Joy of Painting – There is a channel dedicated to Bob Ross. I LOVE me some Bob Ross. I wish they showed more of him on TV.
  • Tampa Bay Mug Shots: Index – This is a great site. It's well designed, clear with a complex reporting system that works for you. Sort by gender, height, age, weight. It's endless fun. Well-done.

These are my delicious links for December 23rd:

  • 5 Amazing Blue Holes [pics] – These are gorgeous. I'd go diving in them, no problem. But it'd be more of the straight-down and up affair. I don't like a rock ceiling above my head when diving, so I'd avoid venturing out much.

    Gorgeous shots though.

  • A Closer Look At the Blueprint CSS Framework – NETTUTS – I don't use Blueprint, nor do I think I fully support these types of frameworks. I think there is a lot of overhead.

What I do like a great deal is the move towards a standard grid-based layout. What I want is just some standard numbers (960, 12, etc) and some options to implement it.

But this is a good starting point for those learning about grids.

Lessons Learned while Building an iPhone Site

Posted in Browsers, CSS, Coding, Design, Development, HTML, Reference, UI Design on November 29th, 2008 by Tony – Be the first to comment

Flickr recently released a Flickr site custom tailored for the iPhone.  They wrote about some of the rules they learnt doing this site, which I find fascinating.  I’m pulling out the main points, but you really need to go read the detailed description of why they’re doing things the way they are.

  1. Don’t Use a JavaScript Library or CSS Framework
  2. Load Page Fragments Instead of Full Pages
  3. Don’t Build for Just One Device
  4. Optimize Everything
  5. Tell the User What is Happening

Now they’ve put together a library just for the iPhone that handles many of these items. The iUI framework seems to be a iPhone version of the YUI framework, but it’s a good start.

  • CSS Browser Hacks For Firefox, Opera, Safari & Internet Explorer – Most standards favoring browsers (Firefox, Opera & Safari) have no method of targeting CSS to the specific browser while Internet Explorer, the buggiest browser, has a completely safe and easy method of serving CSS/HTML to only IE.
  • Crystal Palace – Nothing compares with the giants found in Cueva de los Cristales, or Cave of Crystals. The limestone cavern and its glittering beams were discovered in 2000 by a pair of brothers drilling nearly a thousand feet below ground in the Naica mine.
